Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — The City of Jackson has approved a plan to purchase around 1.5 acres of land from Consumers Energy at a site on the corner of Cooper and Biddle Streets for the purpose of putting a major grocery store at the location.
City Manager Jonathan Greene told WKHM that this location was chosen as the place for a grocery store for its population density among other reasons.

City Manager Greene says he is excited to be able to enter into the next steps of the process with the approval of the purchase.

According to a memo to city staff from John Willis, Jackson’s Chief Equity Officer, the city is purchasing the land for $90,000. Consumers Energy will be contributing $150,000 toward site remediation costs.
Jackson has also invested $4.5 million in ARPA funds to the MLKCIA to drive economic development within the MLK corridor area.
The memo says that environmental commitments include excavating impacted soils and debris, with proper disposal at an appropriate landfill.

The purchase was approved unanimously by the city council.
