Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — A fatal structure fire took place at a condominium community in Blackman Township, according to authorities with the Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety (DPS).
At approximately 10:47 a.m. on Friday, January 9, officials with the DPS responded to a reported structure fire in the 2700 block of Walden Woods Boulevard.
Upon arrival, responding units observed light smoke visible from the exterior of the residence. Fire crews made entry and determined that a fire had occurred and destroyed much of the interior of the home.
Authorities say the fire had self-extinguished prior to arrival, preventing extension of fire damage to neighboring units.
The residence was occupied by an elderly, disabled female who lived alone. During a search of the home, crews located a deceased individual inside the residence.
Investigators spoke with the 911 caller, who reported that she is a home healthcare worker assigned to the resident. She advised that upon arriving at the home, she was unable to make contact with the occupant but observed smoke inside the residence and immediately called 911.
At this time, the identity of the deceased has not been confirmed by authorities and is pending further investigation. The cause of the fire also remains under investigation.
The DPS Fire Investigation Team and Detective Bureau are actively investigating the incident, with assistance from the Michigan State Police.
The DPS was assisted by the Jackson County Central Dispatch, Jackson City Fire Department, Summit Township Fire Department, and Jackson Community Ambulance.
