Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — The Jackson County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution in support of an Aviation Maintenance Technician School at the Jackson County Airport during their study session on Tuesday.

Airport Manager Juan Zapata spoke to the commissioners at the study session, expressing how their support would strengthen the airport’s efforts to obtain federal and state grant funding for the school.

Zapata clarified that the airport is not currently seeking to obtain any public funds from the county, and gave an explanation of the grants that are being applied for.

If the school’s popularity gets to the point where an additional building is needed for students, then Zapata says the airport could possibly ask for public county funds in the future.

Zapata said that the addition of an Aviation Maintenance Technician School to the airport would help with an overall shortage of aviation maintenance workers.
