Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — The City of Jackson held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday (July 31) afternoon for the completion of a multiyear reconstruction effort on the MLK Equality Trail along the newly reconstructed section of the trail between Weatherwax Drive and Park Road.
City officials, Parks and Recreation staff, project partners, and community members were in attendance for the celebration of the completion of this investment in Jackson’s trail system.
City Parks Director Kelli Hoover told WKHM about the importance of the trail improvements and the trail system overall to Jackson.
Hoover also discussed how the system benefits citizens not only the City of Jackson, but in all of Jackson County and beyond.
The final phase of the project reconstructed around 3/4 mile of the MLK Equality Trail between Weatherwax Drive and the Optimist Rest Shelter.
The deteriorating asphalt trail was replaced with a 12-foot-wide concrete shared-use path designed to better accommodate people using the trail. The project also added curb ramps, crosswalks, pavement markings, and lights so that the trail can be accessed at all hours (example pictured below).
The project was supported by a $300,000 Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund grant, which helps local communities develop and improve outdoor recreation facilities.
Jackson Mayor Daniel Mahoney addressed those in attendance before the ribbon was cut, saying the trail plays a role in connecting two communities.
Mayor Mahoney thanked the staff and community members that helped make the event possible.
