Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — A Thursday evening worng-way crash on South US-127 resulted in the death of a 16-year-old passneger in Jackson County.
Sheriff Gary Schuette reports that deputies from the Jackson County Office of the Sheriff (JCSO) responded to a multi-vehicle fatal traffic crash on the evening of Thursday, February 19.
At approximately 7:31 p.m., deputies were dispatched to South US-127 Highway, north of McDevitt Avenue in Summit Township.
Upon arrival, units discovered a high-speed, head-on collision involving a sedan and a pickup truck. The preliminary investigation determined that a sedan, driven by a 36-year-old woman of the City of Jackson, was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of US-127.
The sedan struck a fully loaded pickup truck head-on. A third vehicle was subsequently side-swiped following the initial impact.
A 16-year-old passenger in the sedan was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the sedan was transported to Henry Ford Jackson by Jackson Community Ambulance (JCA) with serious injuries.
The driver of the pickup truck was also transported to Henry Ford Jackson by JCA with serious injuries. The occupants of the third vehicle were not seriously injured.
Due to the severity of the crash and the extensive debris field, both the northbound and southbound lanes of US-127 were closed for several hours to allow for a comprehensive scene reconstruction.
At this stage of the investigation, JCSO officials believe that drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the crash. The incident remains under active investigation by the JCSO Accident Reconstruction Team.
The Jackson County Office of the Sheriff was assisted on-scene by the Summit Township Fire Department, the City of Jackson Fire Department, the City of Jackson Fire Department Drone Unit, the Michigan State Police, and Jackson Community Ambulance.
