Schools remain closed until at least April 5th, although Governor Whitmer has said that may be extended depending on developments related to COVID 19.  Some school districts have been providing online learning but still had questions as to whether or not it would count towards instructional time.

In a memo released from the State of Michigan’s Department of Education on Friday entitled “Instructional Time During School Closure”, local school officials were notified that while districts are encouraged to offer supplemental online learning, there is currently “no mechanism to earn instructional time during a period of mandated school closure”.

Educators were also informed that their own continuing education hours for professional development were subject to the same rules and that classes could be offered, whilst following guidelines regarding crowd size, but the instructional time would not be counted.
