Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — The Jackson Area Transportation Authority (JATA) is speaking out following a report on recent route cancellations. JATA says the service disruptions stem from growing budget issues, not poor planning.
Transit systems across Michigan are bracing for a 10 to 15 percent cut in state operating support next fiscal year. JATA says that if it happens, it would mark the lowest funding level in its history.
Along with staffing shortages and a lack of drivers and mechanics, JATA is also running a reduced fleet due to limited capital funding.
The agency continues to offer full benefits and is actively hiring, but says strict federal regulations, including a zero-tolerance drug policy, make recruitment even more difficult.
The JATA board says these issues are part of a larger transit crisis affecting the entire state.
