Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — Leoni Township has released a public notice that elevated levels of lead in drinking water were found in some homes/buildings in the community.
According to results from samples collected from 10 homes, 2 of them exceeded the Action Level of 12 parts per billion (ppb) for the lead 90th percentile. The notice says that the lead 90th percentile from the 2 outstanding samples was 19 ppb.
Leoni Township says they will soon send a comprehensive public education document about lead in drinking water. The township will also be collecting samples from 20 sites every six months and reviewing the results to determine if corrective actions are necessary to reduce corrosion in household plumbing.
Leoni Township water customers can call 517-522-8445 or a licensed plumber to determine if the service line for their property is made from lead, galvanized, or other materials.
To help with lead reduction for tap water, the MDHHS recommends using a water filter for tap water, use cold water from the tap, run water for extended periods of time to flush out any lead-containing water, and to find out about any construction or maintenance work that could disturb your service line.
Lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Exposure to lead in drinking water can cause serious health effects in all age groups. Infants and children can have decreases in IQ and attention span.
Lead exposure can lead to new learning and behavior problems or exacerbate existing learning and behavior problems. The children of pregnant women who are exposed to lead before or during pregnancy can have increased risk of these adverse health effects. Adults can have increased risks of heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney, or nervous system problems
