Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — The Jackson County Office of the Sheriff (JCSO) has alerted county residents and local businesses of a new scam involving phony documents that look like they come from official Jackson County government offices.
The JCSO says documents often look like invoices or urgent notices and instruct the recipient to make payments via wire transfer.
It was emphasized by Jackson County Sheriff Gary Schuette that the county will never demand transfers electronically through email-based or mailed invoices, and will never request payment via wire transfer.
The Sheriff’s Office says that the scam documents may include:
- Jackson County logos and / or department names
- Language suggesting late fees and legal consequences
- Invoice numbers or “payment due” notices
It is advised that anyone who engages with Jackson County government and believes they could have a legitimate bill to pay should directly contact the appropriate office if they receive an invoice.
Anyone who believes they may have been targeted with fraudulent documents is encouraged to contact the JCSO by calling 911.
