Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — Jackson City Council approved the establishment of a street assessment relief fund during their meeting on Tuesday.

The fund aims to alleviate some of the costs of the city’s special assessments for street construction.

City Manager Jonathan Greene said at the meeting that the idea to create this fund came after discussions of generating revenue through interest of general fund holdings, an idea attributed to City Treasurer Nanette Muntin.

City Communications Manager Christina Crouch commended the collaborative effort between city staff in multiple departments that helped make the idea work.

City Manager Greene says the fund will help the city be able to develop a street plan, as well as help city homeowners with special assessment costs.

According to a memo from City Engineer Troy White and Finance Director Heather Ehnis, relief from the fund as currently constructed will be no more than 50% of a home’s assessment, and relief will not exceed $5,000 per home.

Relief will be available for single-family homes that do not exceed 80% of the Area Median Income (as determined by the US Dept. of Housing and Urban Development) and have property and income taxes paid in full.
