Irish Hills, Mich. (WKHM) — The 2nd annual State of the Irish Hills event was held at Michigan International Speedway this past Friday morning.

Attendees, which included many local Township and Village leaders and business owners, heard from panelists with the Irish Hills Chamber of Commerce, Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, Visit Lenawee, Michigan DNR, and Region 2 Planning Commission.

During the Q&A session, Irish Hills Chamber President Cindy Hubbell spoke about how the area is able to welcome visitors while not compromising what residents love about the region.

Jackson County Chamber CEO Ryan Tarrant discussed the Drive Jackson initiative, saying that collaboration with the community is necessary for it to succeed.

An audience member voiced their concerns about blight in the area during the discussion, with President Hubbell detailing efforts taking place to help reduce it.

Norvell Township Supervisor Bill Sutherland asked how collaborative efforts from Irish Hills’ leadership can get the attention of state leadership, noting the lack of their attendance at the event. Jackson Chamber CEO Tarrant answered that consistent communication with state leaders helps.

One of the efforts that was pointed out in an attempt to increase visitors was the introduction of a new gravel bike race, Irish Hills Gravel. CEO Tarrant said that the area’s outdoor recreation capabilities could be marketed to attract new people to the Irish Hills.
