Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — Work is officially underway on a new solar energy project in Jackson County. Consumers Energy broke ground Friday on the Blackman Solar Gardens — a 30-acre site near Blackman and County Farm Roads.

The Jackson-based utility says the project will include nearly 5,000 panels and is expected to generate enough power for about 2,500 customers by the end of the year.

David Hicks, vice president of clean energy development, says solar energy is not only environmentally friendly but also becoming more affordable and adaptable to future needs. He adds that programs like this help customers save money while supporting clean energy across Michigan.

The site will be part of Consumers’ community solar program, giving customers a way to support renewable energy without installing solar panels themselves.

It’s the company’s fourth community solar project, following others in Cadillac and on college campuses in Kalamazoo and Allendale.
