Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — Consumers Energy has officially entered negotiations to sell its fleet of 13 hydroelectric dams, calling them too expensive to keep operating. The dams span five rivers in Michigan, including the Au Sable, Muskegon, and Grand.

The utility says it’s looking for a buyer willing to continue operating the facilities, which would be sold for a dollar each, with Consumers buying back the power they generate under longer-term agreements.

The possible sale has sparked concern among local residents over potential changes to recreation, property values, and the environment. Conservation groups, meanwhile, want the dams removed to restore river ecosystems.

If a deal falls through, Consumers says it may need to consider relicensing or decommissioning the dams. The company reports losing over $150 million annually on upkeep and upgrades.
