Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — A century-old Catholic university in Adrian is closing its doors. Siena Heights University announced Monday it will shut down permanently after the 2025-26 academic year.
University leaders, along with the Adrian Dominican Sisters, say financial challenges and long-term sustainability led to the difficult decision.
Founded in 1919, the school began as St. Joseph’s College for Women and has served generations of students for more than 100 years.
President Douglas Palmer said Siena’s legacy will live on through its alumni, faculty, and staff, and that the university plans to offer full academic and campus experience in its final year.
Officials say supporting students through the transition is a top priority, with plans to help them transfer to other institutions. Faculty and staff will also receive assistance.
Siena Heights became coed in 1969 and has been a fixture in the Adrian community ever since.
