Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — For the seventh day straight, an Air Quality Alert is in effect across Michigan as thick wildfire smoke from Canada continues to blanket the state.

The National Weather Service (NWS) says a stubborn high-pressure system and light winds are trapping smoke from wildfires in Manitoba and Ontario, keeping it pressed close to the ground. That’s why skies have stayed hazy and why many people are feeling allergy-like symptoms like coughing, sneezing, congestion, and eye irritation; even if they don’t normally suffer from allergies.

People with asthma, heart issues, or other respiratory problems are urged to stay indoors.

As of Monday, nearly every air quality monitor in Michigan was reading “unhealthy for sensitive groups,” with some spots worse. Detroit even ranked third-worst in the world for air quality.

Relief could come Tuesday night as the weather pattern shifts, but higher heat and humidity are on the way.
