Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — An arrest has been made in connection with a Jackson County homicide that took place in 1984. County authorities report that 74-year-old Leonard Hugall has been charged with both First Degree Felony Murder and Second Degree Murder. Hugall is currently in Arcadia, Florida and has agreed to be extradited back to Jackson.
This investigation began in 1984 in Summit Township, when a 13-year-old girl went missing and was never seen again. Over the years, the investigation continued and ultimately led to Hugall being charged with homicide in connection with her disappearance.
Sheriff Gary Schuette commended the detectives’ work on a case that had been on the books for decades.
“This arrest demonstrates that time does not diminish our resolve. Detective Sergeant Kelly Ebersole and Detective Mark Easter have shown relentless dedication on this case. Holding Hugall accountable after all these years is a testament to their commitment and to the fact that we never quit, no matter how long it takes.”
Once Hugall is returned to Jackson County, he will be arraigned in the 12th District Court. He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole. Future court dates cannot be set until the extradition is completed.
