(Jackson, Mich.) — A former Michigan Department of Corrections employee is facing criminal charges following allegations of misconduct with an inmate. Prosecutors say 42-year-old Rene Nelson has been arraigned on one count of second-degree criminal sexual conduct. If convicted, she could face up to 15 years in prison.

Authorities say the charge stems from an incident while Nelson was working as a mental health professional inside a state prison. She’s accused of having an inappropriate relationship with an inmate under her care.

At her arraignment, Magistrate Christopher Dickerson set bond at $2,500 cash surety. Nelson had already been placed on unpaid leave by the Department of Corrections.

A probable cause conference is scheduled for September 12th at one o’clock before Judge Daniel Goostrey. Prosecutors stress the charges are only accusations, and Nelson is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
