Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — A 13-year-old remains placed at the Jackson County Youth Center following a homicide early Thursday morning that resulted in the death of a 16-year-old Jackson resident.
According to Jackson County Prosecutor Kelsey Guernsey, the 13-year-old is being held on allegations of:
- First-Degree Premeditated Murder
- Felony Murder
- Armed Robbery
- Larceny of a Firearm
- Felony Firearm
The maximum possible penalties for First-Degree Premeditated Murder and Felony Murder are life in the Department of Corrections.
These charges relate to a shooting incident that occurred in the City of Jackson at the 500 block of Harris Street in the early morning hours of January 15, 2026.
Based on the age of the juvenile, the Prosecutor’s Office says he cannot be charged as an adult in the State of Michigan.
The case will remain with the Family Court under a designated petition, meaning the proceedings will occur in juvenile court, but he will be entitled to all the hearings and due process rights as an adult.
If convicted, he would then be subject to sentencing as either a juvenile, adult, or blended, based on the rulings of the Family Court Judge and pursuant to the laws of the State of Michigan.
