The City of Jackson, after facing a lawsuit filed by mayoral candidate John Wilson following last years November election, is informing residents and candidates where they can and cannot place campaign signs.

In a press release from the City of Jackson’s Public Information Officer Aaron Dimick residents are reminded that, according to the City’s sign ordinance, “these types of signs are only allowed on private property and not in the right-of-way or “parkway”, which is the area between the street and sidewalk.  However, residents can apply for a permit to place temporary signs in the right-of-way.  Intersections also fall into the ordinance.

The City of Jackson states that there have been “countless violations of this ordinance” committed by residents and the candidates they support.  Dimick says with the election a little more than a month away, now is the time to educate Jackson, “We’ve been increasing communications about campaign signs through our website and seasonal newsletter so our residents will understand where they (campaign and election signs) should be placed”.

If you place a sign in an unapproved area City staff may remove and confiscate the illegally placed signs and did just that during the August election this year.  Don’t worry however as most homes and businesses will receive a warning prior to the signs being taken.

If you have any additional questions about where and how to place a campaign sign, the City of Jackson has produced a video (see below) to help you better understand.
