Jackson, MI – American 1 Credit Union is teaming up with the Michigan Department of Corrections at Parnall Correctional Facility to teach financial skills to incarcerated individuals preparing for reentry into society.
As part of the prison’s Vocational Village program, American 1’s Financial Wellness team is leading classes focusing on three key areas according to Kelly Grygiel, VP of Communications with American 1 Credit Union.
Many participants have been out of the financial world for years, and the goal is to give them the confidence and tools to manage their money and avoid common reentry struggles. Grygiel says even though the program hasn’t been active long enough to mark long term success, they have seen short term impact and it has been well received.
The Vocational Village provides job training and life skills, and this new partnership adds financial education to its rehabilitation efforts.
