Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — The woman many call the “adoptive mother of Jackson” is grieving the loss of her son to gun violence.

44-year-old Anthony Glen Owens, Jr., son of Wanda Beavers — known lovingly as Mama Tu-Tu — was killed in a shooting just after midnight Saturday, May 17. It happened on Lincoln Court, just outside Jackson city limits in Summit Township.

Sheriff’s deputies say four men were shot while sitting on a porch during what neighbors say was a small gathering. Owens later died at the hospital. The three others, ages 43, 42, and 63, are expected to survive.

Investigators say at least three suspects opened fire and fled. No arrests have been made.

Mama Tu-Tu, a longtime community figure known for her kindness and support of Jackson families, says the city’s gun violence has reached a tragic point but declined further comment while she mourns.

Funeral services for Owens are set for May 30 at Hampton Funeral Home. Donations for his burial and children are being accepted at her home on Biddle Street.
