Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — On the agenda for Tuesday evening’s City of Jackson Council meeting was a resolution on the approval of a water and sewer rate hike that would increase the average City resident’s quarterly bill by around $33 for the next two fiscal years. That item was tabled after a motion to postpone the decision to discuss other potential options was put forward by Mayor Daniel Mahoney. The motion passed as a 4-3 vote with the Mayor’s vote and support from Councilmembers Arlene Robinson (Ward 1), Christy May Davis (Ward 5), and Angelita Gunn (Ward 3).
The Council was presented with three options for rate hikes by Adam Campbell of Bendzinski & Co., but the option that would have been voted on proposed the highest rate increase. City Manager Jonathan Greene explained why that option was put onto the agenda.
City Manager Greene says he supports the decision to table the vote to the next City Council meeting. He also answered questions related to recent reporting by The Detroit News that Pivot Development Inc., with Michael Collier of Collier Gibson as C.E.O., used $1.6 million of state grant funds meant for redevelopment to pay back taxes on a hotel in Southfield, which ended up in receivership. Collier Gibson purchased the Hayes Hotel from the City earlier this year.
He says that he is comfortable with where the relationship between the City and Collier Gibson is at.
