JACKSON, Mich. (June 18, 2025) — As southern Michigan braces for a stretch of potentially severe weather and extreme heat, Consumers Energy has mobilized more than 485 crews across the state in preparation for power outages and emergency repairs.
With forecasts calling for strong thunderstorms—including threats of large hail, damaging winds, and possible tornadoes—Consumers Energy has begun strategically positioning crews and equipment in high-risk areas such as Jackson, Flint, and Grand Rapids. The utility company is also bringing in additional support from partner energy companies across the Midwest.
“We know how challenging summer weather can be, from heatwaves to sudden storms,” said David Hicks, one of Consumers Energy’s storm response officers. “Our crews are ready, and our systems are being monitored around the clock. We will work as quickly and safely as possible to restore any service interruptions.”
The company began moving trucks, mobile storm units, and essential materials on Tuesday to ensure rapid response to any outages. These mobile units allow crews to access supplies closer to impacted areas, minimizing delays in restoration efforts.
Severe thunderstorms are expected to sweep through the southern lower peninsula Wednesday evening and persist into Thursday morning. Following the storms, forecasters are warning of a weekend heatwave, with extreme temperatures expected across the entire state.
Consumers Energy is urging residents to take precautions both for severe storms and the incoming heat. Safety tips and preparedness information can be found on the company’s website and social media channels.
Local officials are also encouraging residents to check on vulnerable neighbors, especially the elderly, and to prepare emergency kits with essentials like flashlights, water, and batteries.
