Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — According to the Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety (DPS), crews were dispatched to a structure fire at 134 Huggins Road in Michigan Center at around 3:12 a.m. on Tuesday morning (September 16).
Upon arrival, firefighters observed heavy flames on the east side of a small single-story residence. Officials say a camper parked next to the home was also fully engulfed in flames.
Crews were able to bring the fire under control, but the residence still sustained significant damage. The sole occupant, a 31-year-old man, was asleep when the fire began and was awakened by the blaze.
He was able to escape the residence and call 911 from a neighbor’s phone. The occupant was transported to Henry Ford Jackson Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and minor smoke inhalation.
The Fire Investigation Team with the DPS is investigating the cause of the fire. The DPS says they plan to release additional information as it becomes available.
Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety thanked the Jackson County Central Dispatch, the Jackson Fire Department, Summit Township Fire Department, Grass Lake Fire Department, and Jackson Community Ambulance for their assistance.
