JACKSON, Mich. (WKHM) — With colder weather on the way, Consumers Energy is reminding customers that help is available for those struggling to pay their energy bills. The company’s CARE program is now open for enrollment, offering income-qualified customers a fixed, affordable monthly payment and help paying down past-due balances over 24 months.

The program is funded through the state’s Low-Income Energy Assistance Fund and connects customers to nonprofit partners who help process applications. Those seeking help can call 2-1-1 to get started.

Consumers Energy says new eligibility rules make it easier to qualify — including for customers already receiving state assistance. Additional programs like State Emergency Relief and the Home Heating Credit can also provide extra support this winter.
