Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — The Grass Lake Lady Warriors softball team, coached by Roger Cook, won the Division 3 State Championship Game by the score of 5-4 against Clare on Saturday evening after an eventful seventh inning that saw each team score multiple runs. The contest took place at Secchia Stadium located on Michigan State University’s campus. Pitcher Morgan Conrad was on the mound for all seven innings, as was the case in Grass Lake’s semifinal game against Algonac.
WKHM provided live radio coverage of the game with announcer Connor Dockery, where Bree Salts got the scoring going in the top of the third inning for the Lady Warriors.
Grass Lake would face adversity in the game, with Clare scoring a run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth, and a hit from the Lady Pioneers’ Savannah Buzzelli sent a run home to put Grass Lake in a 2-1 deficit headed into the seventh inning.
In the top of the seventh, the Lady Warriors would get the scoring they needed. Emily Brown got the hit that sent the tying run home, and Leilah Smith put the ball in play for two more runners to score to return Grass Lake’s lead.
Bree Salts followed that up with a sacrifice fly ball to make it 5-2 in favor of Grass Lake before the top of the inning was over. In the bottom of the seventh, Clare showed resilience, with the Lady Pioneers putting up two runs thanks to hits from Tessa Kelly and Breez Yarger.
However, that would not stop the Lady Warriors from becoming State Champions for the first time in program history, as Reese Lape caught the final out to end Clare’s rally one run short.
In addition to the state title, Grass Lake’s softball team ended the season with a record of 40-4. WKHM’s broadcast of the game with Connor Dockery announcing can be found on the High School Sports Archive section of this website, or by clicking here.
