Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — The Jackson County Chamber of Commerce has released a new recommendation to help the City of Jackson tackle a major shortfall in parking infrastructure funding — offering an alternative to more costly proposals.

Instead of the city’s original plan to raise $750,000 through higher assessments or new parking meters, the Chamber proposes a 20% reduction in that target — to $600,000 — by raising parking permit fees and fines and charging a one-time flat fee of about $700 per property owner.

Fines would go up to $28, and permit fees would increase by 25%. The plan also includes free or reduced permits for low-income downtown workers.

Chamber President Ryan Tarrant called it a “fair and balanced” solution that avoids ongoing strain on local businesses while keeping downtown accessible to customers.
