Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — The City of Jackson now has a newly appointed Treasurer, filling the position’s vacancy following the passing of former Treasurer Martin Griffin.

Nanette Muntin was ultimately voted in by City Council, although she was not the Council’s first choice.

Muntin told WKHM that her desire to get back into working with finances drew her to the job.

Muntin says that the City’s Treasurer’s Office has laid a good foundation for her to be able to hit the ground running.

Muntin and the other candidates, who were David Hammontree, Rohn Sharlow, and Jonathan Williams, were interviewed for roughly 30 minutes each by the Council.

They answered questions regarding topics including experience handling public money, how they plan to build public trust in the position, and how they have navigated complying with tax laws.

Following the interviews, Council decided to nominate all four candidates before voting by ballot. Nanette Muntin and former Jackson County Commissioner Jonathan Williams received three votes each, advancing them to the final ballot vote. Rohn Sharlow received one vote during the first ballot vote.

Initially, Williams received four votes to Muntin’s three. But right after the vote, Williams took to the podium to declare that he would not be accepting the position, saying he would not be able to live up to Martin Griffin’s legacy.

A motion was then moved and supported to appoint Muntin to Treasurer, which passed 4-3. Councilmembers Angelita Gunn, Connor Wood, Christy May Davis, and Will Forgrave voted yes. Councilmember Arlene Robinson, Vice Mayor Freddie Dancy, and Mayor Daniel Mahoney voted no, saying they would rather have started the voting process over rather than go straight to appointing Muntin.

Muntin also took to the podium after being appointed, expressing her commitment to the position of City Treasurer.

A primary election for the position of Jackson City Treasurer will take place in 2026.
