Jackson, MI – Jackson firefighters responded to a structure fire Tuesday evening at the former Michner Plating facility on North Mechanic Street. Crews arrived just after 6 p.m. to find flames and heavy smoke pouring from the front of the building.
An aggressive interior attack helped bring the fire under control with support from multiple departments across the county. Due to the site’s history of industrial contamination, air quality monitors were set up early and remained active throughout the response. Officials say levels never exceeded safety thresholds.
Out of caution, the Jackson County Emergency Operations Center was activated, and the EPA was called to the scene. Firefighters from Summit Township, Blackman-Leoni, Napoleon, Spring Arbor, Henrietta, and Grass Lake all responded, along with the Jackson Disaster Assistance Response Team. Jackson Community Ambulance also stood by with medical support.
Crews remained on scene until after 10 p.m. to ensure the fire was fully out. No injuries were reported. The cause is under investigation.
