Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — Columbia Charter Township has reduced the hours of the township park at Clark Lake located on Hyde Road, and has also reduced parking availability, in response to numerous instances of arrests made for poor behavior at the park. A recent example of this happened earlier in the week. Authorities were dispatched to the park on June 22nd at 7:46 pm for a fight that officials say had more than twenty individuals involved.
Officers from Columbia Charter Township Police Department, Napoleon Township Police Department, Jackson County Office of the Sheriff, and the Michigan State Police responded to restore order. On arrival the initial altercation that created the multiple calls into 911 had dispersed. However, police say an additional altercation between other individuals apart from the initial incident was gaining momentum to becoming a physical altercation. Officers contacted the participants and they say they were met with very little cooperation from a portion of this secondary incident.
The individual igniting the secondary disturbance was identified as 44-year-old Robert C. Sumner of Jackson and he was ultimately detained for disorderly conduct and resisting and obstructing a police officer. Sumner was arrested and transported to the Jackson County Jail and lodged for both offenses. Sumner was charged for resisting and obstructing a police officer, and he also received a secondary charge for disorderly conduct. Sumner would later be released on bond.
The entire incident remains under investigation. Police say they have evidence that includes but is not limited to video recordings and statements. The supplemental reports will be forwarded to the prosecutor seeking charges on additional persons who chose to unlawfully engage in this altercation. People with additional information specific to this incident are asked to contact the Columbia Charter Township Police Department at 517-592-3122.
