Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — A Jackson man was arrested early Sunday morning after an hours-long altercation with authorities in Michigan Center.

Police became involved late Saturday night, when officers with the Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety (DPS) were dispatched to the area of N Lakeside Drive and Fifth Street for a felonious assault at around 11:20 p.m.

A female caller told 911 that she and her boyfriend had an incident with a male in a ski mask who was attempting to slash their vehicle’s tires. When the two confronted him, the suspect allegedly assaulted them with what was described as a long, metal object.

The suspect attempted to flee, but the boyfriend was able to pursue him and take off his ski mask. He was identified to 911.

The suspect was later found at a residence on Catalpa Drive, where he brandished a handgun and refused to leave the home that was also occupied by a woman and several children. The Jackson County Special Response Team (JCSRT) and the Jackson County Negotiator Team responded and began communicating with the suspect.

He was lodged at the Jackson County Jail without incident after negotiations lasted around 5 hours between the suspect and police. He was identified as a 41-year-old Jackson man.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office’s (JCSO) records, 41-year-old Tony Hulburt was lodged at around 6:55 a.m. Sunday on one count of aggravated assault and one count of non-aggravated assault.

The Jackson County Dive Team recovered a weapon in the Michigan Center Lake at around 11 a.m. on Sunday, which officials believe the suspect discarded while fleeing.

There are currently no outstanding suspects, and police say there is no ongoing threat to the public as the investigation continues.

The Blackman-Leoni DPS, JCSO, JCSRT, Michigan State Police, Napoleon Township Police, Jackson County Dive Team, and Jackson County Central Dispatch were all involved with the response to this incident.
