Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — Tuesday’s Jackson City Council meeting was the first council meeting since the homicide of 18-year-old Mia Sims, the niece of Jackson Mayor Daniel Mahoney.

Mayor Mahoney took time during his comments near the end of the meeting to address the incident, thanking the Jackson community for their overwhelming support of him and his family in recent times.

The shooting took place when Sims had gone to her car while she was attending church, where the Mayor said she was with her mother in her final moments.

Mahoney said that while the homicide has resulted in one death, two lives are now lost in the aftermath.

The suspect, Antonio Green, has been arrested in Fresno, California, where he is awaiting extradition to Jackson.
