Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — Two Jackson Public Schools assistant superintendents are now the finalists to become the district’s next top leader.

The school board has narrowed its internal search to Jeremy Patterson, who oversees secondary curriculum, and Julie Baker, in charge of elementary curriculum and federal programs. Both were interviewed during a four-hour board meeting on Monday.

Questions focused on crisis response and how each would handle financial challenges, including a projected $4 million budget shortfall. A final decision was delayed as the board reviews community feedback.

They’ll meet again Tuesday, May 6, when they could appoint a new superintendent — or decide to widen the search.

Consultant Mark Palmer from the Michigan Association of School Boards said both candidates bring deep experience to Jackson, which he described as both a strength and a challenge, given how well-known they are in the district.

Current superintendent Jeff Beal is set to retire June 30 after 11 years with the district.
