Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — Jackson Public Schools is naming one of its own as the district’s next superintendent. Jeremy Patterson, currently the assistant superintendent of secondary curriculum, will drop the “assistant” and take over the job starting July 1.

The school board voted 6 to 1 in favor of Patterson during a special meeting Tuesday night. Board President Shalanda Hunt praised Patterson’s broad experience across the district, saying he’s worked in nearly every level of education — from teacher to principal to coach.

Patterson, a Jackson High graduate, said he’s committed to giving back to the community that helped shape him. He called education his life’s work and said working with young people never feels like just a job.

Trustee Kesha Hamilton cast the lone no vote, citing concerns over how Patterson handled a question about past leadership mistakes during his interview.

Patterson will take over for current superintendent Jeff Beal, who retires June 30 after 11 years in the role. Contract details for Patterson are still being finalized.
