Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — Leoni Township is moving to outsource its building inspection services to the city of Jackson.

At a meeting Tuesday, May 13, the township board voted 5-1 in favor of the agreement, which shifts responsibilities like plan reviews, code enforcement, and follow-up inspections to Jackson — excluding rental property inspections.

The deal comes after Leoni paused the decision last month to explore options, but officials say Jackson’s three-inspector team offers more flexibility and faster response times.

Trustee Ron Kinch said it could save the township up to $80,000 a year by replacing the current full-time inspector position. Trustee Jerry Cox added the contract allows either side to back out if needed.

The City of Jackson still needs to approve the deal at its May 27 council meeting.

City officials say the partnership strengthens ties and won’t reduce service quality for either community.
