Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — A Jackson man serving life without parole for a deadly home invasion streamed on Facebook will be resentenced.

The Michigan Supreme Court has thrown out the sentence of Anthony Gelia, who was convicted in 2018 for the murder of 26-year-old Brittany Southwell. Gelia was 19 at the time of the crime.

The high court recently ruled it’s unconstitutional to impose automatic life without parole for those who were 19 or 20 when the offense occurred, saying young offenders deserve a chance for rehabilitation.

The ruling now applies retroactively, opening the door for nearly 600 inmates to be resentenced.

Jurors in Gelia’s case watched his Facebook Live video showing him threatening people with a gun and kicking in the door of a Jackson home. Moments later, Southwell was shot and killed while holding her baby.

A new sentencing date has not yet been set.
