Michigan Center, Mich. (WKHM) — The Michigan Center School District made an announcement from their Food Department via social media on August 8 that told families that students in the district are only guaranteed to receive free meals through their school meal program until October 2 of this year.
The district cites the delay of the passing of educational funding within the state budget for the upcoming school year as the cause of the notice. They say the delay is having an impact on the Michigan School Meals Program, which normally allows Michigan Center to provide free meals to students all year long.
They state that they will use federal guidelines to continue offering free breakfast and lunch until October 2.
Families are not required to take any immediate action, but will eventually receive an application in regard to this update. Michigan Center says it is critical that all families complete the application when it is made available, as the data provides essential funding for other programs regardless of the meal funding outcome.
The district is hopeful that the state legislature will resolve the issue soon, and says they will keep families updated.
