Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — Authorities with the Jackson Post of the Michigan State Police (MSP) are investigating two fatal incidents involving vehicles that took place on Saturday, July 12, 2025 in Jackson County. The first incident happened at around 7:10 a.m. in Liberty Township, where troopers were dispatched to a residence in the 8200 block of Thorne Road for a single vehicle crash.

The homeowners contacted 911 after hearing a loud crash. The homeowners came out to find a Chevy pickup had crashed head on into a tree in their yard. Troopers’ preliminary investigation shows the driver, a 52-year-old man from Horton, was operating a 2016 Chevy Silverado pickup traveling southbound on Thorne Road when it appeared the driver lost consciousness after suffering a medical emergency.

The vehicle then drifted off the roadway, into the ditch, and struck the tree. The driver was transported to Henry Ford Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Troopers were assisted on scene by Jackson Community Ambulance and Department of Natural Resources Officers. Authorities say it is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.

 

The second incident took place in Grass Lake Township at approximately 11:45 p.m. when troopers were dispatched to the Clear Lake Storage units located at 4345 Clear Lake Rd. Troopers were told that a subject was riding in the bed of a pickup truck and fell off, hitting his head. Before troopers arrived, the victim was already being transported to the Henry Ford Hospital by the Jackson Community Ambulance.

MSP’s preliminary investigation shows that a 21-year-old man from Grass Lake was operating a 2002 Chevy Silverado pickup with five passengers. Two of the passengers were in the cab and three passengers were in the pickup bed sitting on the tailgate of the pickup. The pickup was traveling on the driveway to the rear of the storage unit when the driver was told one of the passengers, a 22-year-old man from Chelsea, had fallen off the pickup.

The passenger suffered severe injuries from the fall and was pronounced deceased at the hospital. Authorities do not know at this time if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the incident.

Investigations into both incidents are currently ongoing.
