Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — A murder case in Jackson County is on hold after a defense attorney stepped down due to a conflict of interest.

22-year-old Jayvion Hodge is accused in the deadly drive-by shooting of 17-year-old Kalil Calunga-Rodriguez last June. But during court Tuesday, Chief Deputy Public Defender Kevin Rogers was allowed to withdraw from the case after it was discovered he had previously represented someone now listed as a witness.

Judge John McBain said that creates a clear conflict, and a new attorney will be appointed for Hodge. His next pretrial is scheduled for May 13.

Calunga-Rodriguez, who lived in Lansing, was shot in the upper torso behind a home on Griswold Street and later died at the hospital. Police say the two exchanged gunfire during a dispute.

Hodge and his co-defendant, Kamiyah McLeain, could face life in prison if convicted. Both remain in the Jackson County Jail.
