Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — The Leoni Township Board of Trustees has rejected a proposed ordinance that would have regulated short-term rentals, such as those booked through Airbnb and VRBO. The vote came during Tuesday night’s meeting and followed a recommendation from the planning commission to leave current rules in place. The measure failed a 6-0 vote, with Treasurer Marcia King absent.

The ordinance was drafted in response to resident complaints about lakefront rentals, including issues with noise, trespassing, and overcrowding. It would have required rental owners to apply for permits and limited stays to no more than 30 consecutive days.

Despite turning down the new rules, township leaders say they still plan to take action when complaints arise. Officials emphasized that current laws allow for enforcement if problems are reported, and say the police can investigate and issue charges when necessary.

Residents dealing with disturbances are encouraged to call 911 so police can respond in real time.
