Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — Several emergency sirens in Jackson County are down following last month’s severe weather. Officials say at least five sirens have malfunctioned — including two that failed during a tornado warning on March 30 in Jackson and Pleasant Lake.

Central Dispatch Director Jason Hamman says circuit board issues are likely to blame. He explained that the county acts fast when problems are reported, but sometimes issues go unnoticed until routine testing.

Three more sirens failed during a monthly test on April 5 — located in Waterloo Township, near Northwest Schools on Rives Junction Road, and in Leoni Township along Sargent Road. A fourth siren in Spring Arbor has been out of service for years due to costly motor repairs. Township officials say there is no plan to replace it.

Crews from West Shore Services will be in Jackson County April 10 and 11 to reprogram or fully replace faulty components. Sirens will be tested briefly after repairs, with efforts underway to avoid disrupting school exams.
