Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — Strong wind gusts topping 70 miles per hour tore across Michigan overnight as a powerful line of storms moved through the state. The damaging winds — referred to as “gustnadoes” — knocked out power to more than 160,000 homes and businesses.
Consumers Energy reported the majority of those outages, with some of the hardest-hit areas including Kalamazoo County, where nearly 50,000 customers lost electricity. In Muskegon County, about 21,000 were without power.
Ahead of the storms, Consumers said they had more than 500 crews — both company and contract workers — staged and ready to respond. Utility officials emphasized they’d be working through the night and into the day to get the lights back on.
A Consumers Energy spokesperson said Michigan’s weather can turn quickly, and their job is to stay ahead of it. He added crews were monitoring the forecast closely and positioned to move as needed to restore service.
According to the Consumers Energy Outage map, nearly 5,000 customers in Jackson County were without power. Most of that power should be restored this morning, according to Consumers.
