Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — A major water main break inside Jackson County’s downtown jail over the weekend is causing serious disruptions to daily operations.

According to the department’s Facebook page, the break happened Sunday in the jail’s booking area, flooding the floor and destroying five computers and several monitors — damage estimated at over $8,000. Cleanup crews are now using large fans and dehumidifiers, which staff say is making it difficult for them to hear phone calls or help people at the front desk.

Sheriff Gary Schuette says the jail’s age played a role in the failure and fears  more water may be trapped under the floor. Crews will need to cut into it to assess the full extent of the damage.

Despite the challenges, the jail remains fully operational, and safety has not been compromised. Officials expect things to return to normal in the next couple days and are asking for patience from the public.

The Wesley Street jail has been in use since 1953.
