Michigan has a new No-Fault Insurance law, and it is not without its critics.

However, it is movement in the right direction, and that’s a start according to NAACP Detroit Branch President Reverend Wendell Anthony. “I’m happy that 60% of the folk in Detroit that don’t have insurance have an option. It’s not a perfect plan, but it moves us in the area that we can continue to fight the good fight until we get the type of insurance program of equity that benefits everybody, regardless of where they live, regardless of who they are, regardless of their zip code or their territory; that is based on how they drive and not who they are.”

State Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey says let them critique. “So far, I’ve not seen any fallout. There’s the typical naysayers who don’t want to have to change anything,” Senator Shirkey said. “We’ve purposely established a long tail to implement, to give systems a chance to change; particularly in the insurance industry, and the hospital provider industry. Next July, things become real, I promise you, you’re going to have an opportunity, you’re going to have choices to make, but you’re going to have an opportunity to save some real dollars on auto insurance.”

When it comes to the people who are trying to spin it negatively, Shirkey has some advice for you: “Let people blow up a little bit and complain, but it’s a pretty solid program. Over the next one to two years, people will be very happy with it, I believe.”
